Kerala Floods: UAE, Qatar and Maldives offer financial assistance; India yet confirm acceptance

In an effort to share in the rebuilding process and provide relief to the people of Kerala that witnessed it worst flood devastation in the last 100 years, the government of UAE, Qatar and Maldives has offered financial assistance to India.

While UAE government has offered USD 100 million (approximately Rs 700 crore), the government of Qatar has pledged to donate Rs 35 crore and Maldives and Rs 35 lakhs from the government of Maldives.

So far GoaChronicle.com has learned through informed sources in the foreign governments that the offer to assist has been conveyed to the government of India. Both UAE and Qatar have a large population of Keralites working in their countries, whose families have been affected by the flood disaster. Maldives on the other hand have over 1500 families from the country staying in India, out of which 800 families reside in Kochi, Kerala.

The Indian government however is yet to accept foreign assistance offered by the UAE, Qatar and Maldives government.

A total of 10,28,000 people were now housed in 3,274 camps in the flood-hit districts.
