Kolkata, Jun 20 (IECurrentAffairs)The city police has suspended Sub-Inspector Piyush Pal of Charu Market Police Station and served showcause notices to two other police officers, one each at Bhowanipur and Maidan Police Station, for their alleged dereliction in duty when former Miss-Universe- India Ushoshi Sengupta approached
them for help on June 18.
The suspension on SI Pal and serving of showcause notices to Maidan Police Station SI Partha Chatterjee and SI of Bhawanipur Police Station Menon Mazumder were effected following the report of a probe committee, headed by Deputy Police Commissioner (South ) Meeraj Khalid (IPS), who was asked to probe the role of the policemen into the harassment of 30-year-old model and assault of App cab driver by the motor-cycle borne gang near Exide More, adjacent to Maidan Police Station near Rabindra Sadan.
Police department at Lalbazar, headquarters of Kolkata Police, swung into action after social media reacted severely against the police role following Ushoshi Sengupta’s post narrating her ordeal and helplessness when she reported the matter to three police stations, a 20-minute drive among those police stations.
Ushoshi was returning home to Charu Market with her colleague on a App cab from working place on EM Bypass in the night of June 18.
She said she pleaded with the police on the night fearing the ruffians would kill the driver, rather than her own safety first.
Ushoshi said she was not molested but was rather apprehending the gang of youth on motor cycles may kill the driver.
Driver Tarak Debnath in his statement said the police stations refused to take FIR on the plea that the crime scene was not under their jurisdiction.
Altogether seven accused arrested in the crime were remanded to police custody till June 21.
The accused are Sheikh Rohit, Fardin Khan, Sk Sabbir Ali, Sk Gani, Imran Ali, Sk Wasim and Sk Atif (all in their late 20s), arrested under various Sections, including 354.
