Hyderabad/New Delhi, Jan 11 (GCCurrentAffairs) BJP Telangana unit President Dr K Laxman has urged Union Minister for Earth Science and Technology Dr Harsh Vardhan to allot more funds to the Forest Research Institute (FRI)-Hyderabad.
A memorandum in this regard was submitted to Mr Harsh Vardhan in New Delhi on Friday, a copy of which was released to media here.
Dr Laxman said that the FRI, Hyderabad was established as a Forest Research Centre during the year 1997 at Bahadurpally village of Medchal District in Telangana, near Hyderabad. Subsequently it was upgraded into the level of an Institute in the year 2012– Forest Research Institute.
The Institute has excellent laboratory facilities and well-qualified and experienced scientific personnel. The Institute also makes special efforts to reach various stake-holders– State Forest Departments, farmers, universities involved in forestry research, tree-growers, NGOs and other user groups through its extension programme.
The Institute has widened its research activities in the field of biomass estimation and carbon sequestration in addition to its conventional research activities. The Institute has been able to draw attention and support of prestigious national and international organizations like the World Bank, ICRISAT, NRSA, HMDA and NMPB.
But, unfortunately, the Institute has been neglected and not being utilized its services upto its mark. The Institute has just 44 ministerial staff and being allotted Rs 5.13 crore budget only. Of this, about Rs 4.8 crore goes for salaries, maintenance and establishment. Just a meagre amount Rs 2 lakhs left for training and Rs 29.20 lakhs for research. Extension training camp component needs to be raised for full-fledged utility of the Institution. Due to which, the Institute is unable to extend its services/activities to different fields, Dr Laxman said.
“ Therefore, we request you to allot more funds and utilise the Institute to maximum possible extent”, the BJP President said in the memorandum.
