Lockdown Politics in West Bengal

Recent measures had been taken by the Bengal government to announce a complete lockdown from May 16 to May 30. This had been eyed upon since the lockdown took place after Eid. Under the governance of CM, there was no lockdown after the elections but partial lockdown and related guidelines existed during religious gatherings.

A week ago, there had been a criterion for following the COVID guidelines to prevent the surfeit spread of infection and was supposed to be followed even during religious practice.

After the fifteenth of May, the seriousness to control the massive spread of the virus had been considered once again and so Mamata Banerjee announces complete lockdown in West Bengal. There had been certain notions regarding the time and point of announcing lockdown, whether it is concerned to a common side or concerning the health of common people on normal grounds.

Well, the restrictions were still imposed with context to any common gatherings and not only to a particular group. All the necessary measures were equally meant for academic or cultural or social related things. This included buying important stuff from 7 am to 9 am and 3 pm to 5 pm.

Under the provisions of the DM Act, 2005 the norms concerned with the violation of any regulations should not take place and associated counting of electoral should also be guided by the electoral commission.

Now with the full lockdown being imposed, the new rules have come, allowing only the running of emergency services. Even the government and private offices are supposed to remain closed. The time for the functioning of the market had also been made strictly from 7 am to 10 am.

From private vehicles to private jobs, all had been announced to remain close. It is obvious for the refreshment centres like cinemas, swimming pools, gyms, etc. will not function as well.

Alapan Bandyopadhayay, the chief secretary of the state had also approved for averting the private transport as well as the urge to avoid any outdoor work from 9 pm to 5 am.

Other common guidelines related to social gathering remain the same, not allowing more than fifty people in family functions and prohibiting the practice related to social, cultural, and academic crowd.

Talking about the fresh cases in West Bengal, it was jotted down to a good score of twenty thousand eight hundred and forty-six on Friday only to rise more than ten lakhs later. Sources had mentioned that even doctors had been caught under this hold of the virus.

Free of cost vaccination process by the central government had also been focused on by the CM, where one crore vaccines should be provided to hospitals that are among the private ones. The half percentage involvement in the state government offices had also come under one of the strict strategies under the “strict strategy” after the assembly results.
