On Wednesday, the Congress lost yet another renowned leader to the BJP as former Union Minister Jitin Prasad swapped Congress and moved towards the BJP.
For Congress, Prasad was a face considered to influence the Brahmin community in Uttar Pradesh. He joined the BJP in party headquarters in presence of Union Minister Piyush Goyal.
After joining BJP, Prasad complimented Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said “Today, if there is any party or a leader standing for interests of the nation, given the tough situations our country is going through, it is the BJP and PM Narendra Modi.” He further said that “I have a three-generation connection with the Congress, so I took this decision after a lot of surmises. In the last 8-10 years that if there is one truly national party, it is BJP other parties are regional and individual-centric.”
Benefit for BJP
This step of Jitin Prasad of switching to the BJP has added the strength to Saffron party. This may help the party in the Uttar Pradesh assembly lined up next year. Prasada is a famous Brahmin face in central UP as he is the founder of the Brahmin Chetna Parishad and has been continuously raising his voice for the community. The BJP was also looking for a young face to increase the reach of the party among the Brahmin community.
History in Congress
Jitin Prasad was once considered very close to Rahul Gandhi. He was unhappy and unsatisfied with the functioning of the party. He was also the part of G23(Group of 23) leaders who had written to Sonia Gandhi regarding immanent changes in the party last year.
He was the Congress in charge of the West Bengal elections where the party lost the battle in a very awful way. At that time, he had raised questions about the party’s alliance in Bengal for the elections.
He had won from Shahjahanpur and Dhaurahara Lok Sabha constituencies in the 2004 and 2009 elections.
Also, he had served the MoS form Steel from April 2008 to May 2009 in UPA-1 leadership. In UPA-11 rule, he held the portfolios of MoS, Ministry of petroleum and natural gas, Ministry of road transport, and Highway and Human resource development.
Jitin Prasad is the son of Congress veteran Jitendra Prasad who had served as the political advisor to former Prime Ministers Rajiv Gandhi and P. V. Narasimha Rao. On 9 November 2000, Jitendra Prasad fought the Congress party’s presidential elections against Sonia Gandhi.
BJP welcomed Prasad
Before switching to the BJP, Jitin Prasad reached Union Minister Piyush Goyal’s residence in New Delhi. This sudden development took place soon after Anil Baluni, BJP spokesperson and MP Uttarakhand declared about “joining of an eminent personality” through his Tweet.
After his joining procedures, numerous BJP leaders congratulated and welcomed him in the party including Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah, president of the party Mr. J P Nadda, and UP CM Yogi Adityanath.
Congress losing its gems
In the past few years, many known faces quit the Congress and joined BJP, the list includes Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sanjay Singh, Tom Vadakkan, Radhakrishna Vikhe, Rita Bahuguna Joshi, and many more. As per the conditions of the Congress party, it seems that the list will go longer in the coming time.
