Mahanand Naik on Monday was convicted for murder after being acquitted in seven other cases. The conviction order was pronounced by Principal Sessions Judge Nutan Sardessai in the case of 32-year old Sushila Fatarperkar of Curca.
In this particular case, Mahanand was accused of luring Sushila on 24th October 2007 under the promise of marrying her and then taking her to an isolated spot in the Goa University complex where he strangulated her and fled with her gold ornaments.
The prosecution led by Sarojini Sardinha, examined 21 witnesses including Mukund Rivankar, a gold smith who deposed that Mahanand had sold gold ornaments to him.
Mahanand who is also convicted for rape, has appealed against that order before the High Court of Bombay at Goa.
