Mahanand Gets Second Conviction For Murder

Mahanand Naik on Thursday was convicted for the second murder case as the Principal District and Sessions Judge at Panjim held him guilty of murdering 19-year-old Vasanti Gawde from Madkai in 1995.
Following a missing complaint filed by Vasanti’s cousin on 11th September 1995, police had in fact picked up Mahanand as a suspect but subsequently released him after rickshaw drivers and others held a dharna in front of the Ponda police station.
However, after Mahanand was arrested in April 2009 in a case of rape, while in police custody, he confessed to killing Vasanti and thereafter the charge sheet was filed against him for murdering the teenager and fleeting with her gold ornaments.
The prosecution examined 12 witnesses to prove its case and Vasanti’s cousin’s deposition of having seen Mahanand driving her away in his rickshaw helped establish his involvement in the crime.
Arguments on the quantum of sentence have been fixed for 4th July.
This is Mahanand’s second conviction after being acquitted in seven cases. He has been awarded the life sentence in the murder of Susheela Fatarpekar. He also stands convicted for rape of his wife’s friend.
