Mahanand Naik was on Friday sentenced to seven year rigorous imprisonment on charges of rape and asked to pay a fine of ` 25,000, failing which was ordered to undergo a further period of two months simple imprisonment.
Pronouncing the judgement Friday morning, Principal Sessions Judge, Nutan Sardessai directed that the fine levied be paid to the victim.
It may be recalled that Mahanand was first summoned to the police station to investigate into the complaint lodged by his wife’s friend wherein she had accused him of raping her by coercing her into having a sexual relationship with him.
At the police station, it came to light that Mahanand was involved in the disappearance of a local girl Yogita Naik and subsequently he confessed to murdering not only her but many other young girls, following which he was given the sobriquet “dupatta killer”.
While Mahanand has been acquitted in three murder cases, trial in other cases are underway at different courts.
