Hyderabad: A major fire broke out in the underground hydel power generation plant of Srisailam project in Nagarkurnool district of Telangana, on Thursday night.
At least seven employees including engineers were reportedly trapped in the fire that occurred in one of the power panels at left bank power house, according to fire officials.
Initial reports indicated that a short circuit has caused the fire.Firefighters are at the spot and carrying out the rescue operation.
Telangana Minister Jagadish Reddy and Telangana Genco Chairman and Managing Director D.Prabhakar Rao, who reached the spot, were overseeing the rescue operations.Power generation was suspended following the incident.
The Srisailam dam is located across the Krishna river which serves as the border between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Meanwhile, in a statement, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao expressed shock over the fire incident that took place at Srisailam hydel Power Generation Plant.
The Chief Minister is eliciting information on the accident on a regular basis.Mr Rao wanted all those who were trapped in the plant to come out safely.
He spoke to Minister Jagdeesh Reddy and Mr Prabhakar Rao who are at the plant site and reviewed the relief measures taking place there.
In a release, Union Minister of state for Home Affairs G Kishan Reddy said ‘Saddened by the fire accident in the Hydel Power Generation plant on the left bank in Srisailam project.’
He said he spoke to the NDRF personnel and directed them to take up immediate rescue operations.
