Mamata or Kim Jong-Un?

On 27th 2021 as the first phase of West Bengal assembly elections took place another major case of political violence was reported. At the time when voting was underway for various seats Suvendu Adhikari’s brother Soumendu Adhikari’s car was attacked in Dakshin Kanthi constituency. His car was badly ruined, and the driver of the car was mercilessly beaten. Fortunately, BJP leader Soumendu Adhikari was not present in the car during the attack for which BJP blamed the TMC.

Along with this The Anti Rowdy Squad on 26th recovered 26 crude bomb pieces in cotton bags kept inside plastic shanties from a building in Beniapukur of Kolkata of West Bengal. The crude bombs were seized from the officials of the bomb disposal squad. This all comes just a day before the first day of voting.

Two security personnel were injured in a firing at Satsatmal of Bhagwanpur constituency on Saturday just before the voting started. BJP district president Anup Chakraborty alleged that attempts were made to terrorise the voters by the goons of TMC.

However, reacting to the attack on Soumendu Adhikari’s car on the very first day of polling, Union Minister Giriraj Singh said that CM Mamata Banerjee is following the footsteps of North Korea’s supreme leader Kim Jong-un. Singh also added that Mamata cannot see her opponents alive and has now turned into a ‘face of terror’. This comment of the BJP minister came during the increased political violence in Bengal amidst the assembly elections which began today. Over the last few months numerous incidents of political violence including frequent attacks on BJP leaders’ convoys and offices. Showing confidence in BJP’s victory Giriraj Singh also claimed that Mamata Bnaerjee will leave her office on 2nd May for sure.

The violence in Bengal is not new. This is the story of everytime that TMC goons use to attack BJP personnel everytime and no coercive actions are taken by police. Recently a missing BJP worker was found hanging from a tree in West Midnapore, the body of Lalmohan Soren,30, was found near his house at Jora Kusmi in Bagmari under Salboni police station limits. His wife Fulmani claimed he was not involved in politics but said he had been missing for the past few days. Party state president Dilip Gosh said “Trinamool’s Khela Hobe was a game of hanging people.” BJP however claimed 3 more party workers were killed along with this one. On Thursday, the bodies of two BJP workers- Pratap Barman and Dipankar Biswas were found in Santipur, Nadia.

Aboriginal as the violence is in West Bengal politics it is a measure of the intensity of the tussle between rival camps, indicating that there is a growing political power that is challenging the opposing parties. This is a recurrent pattern in West Bengal’s tense and competitive politics.
