Unable to bear the recent loss of his job, a 45-year-old truck driver from Navelim, Bicholim, took his life by jumping into the Mandovi River on Thursday evening, according to the Ponda police. His body was found in Volvoi, Ponda, on Friday.
Shivanand Ramnath Naik, the father of a school-going girl, was employed at the time of his suicide. However, the loss of his earlier job had taken a toll on his mental health. Ponda police sub-inspector Sachin Panhalkar said that Naik had been depressed for several days prior to the tragic incident.
According to information given to the police by Naik’s family members, his depression arising from his recent job loss caused him to develop an alcohol dependency. His family members said that he had gone missing since Thursday morning.
On Friday morning, sand extracting motorboat workers found his body entangled in the anchor rope of their boat in Volvoi, Ponda. The boat owner immediately called the police to report the incident, Panhalkar said.
The Ponda police has registered a case of unnatural death under Section 174 of the CrPC. Naik’s body was handed over to his family on Friday afternoon after the autopsy was conducted at the Goa Medical College hospital in Bambolim.
