The Anjuna police have rescued a 30-year-old Margao housewife who was allegedly lured into the sex trade by Madhu Pai, 34, from Taleigao, who promised to pay her a “big amount” in return for a few hours of work.
Anjuna police, led by PI Manjunath Dessai, arrested Pai, who claims to be a real estate agent, for forcing the housewife into “sex work”.
Pai was arrested on Friday evening under Sections 4 (living on the earnings of a trafficked victim) and 5 (procuring girls for prostitution) of the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act (ITPA).
The victim was rescued and sent to the state protective home at Merces.
Anjuna police received information on Friday that Pai would be coming to Anjuna with the victim to hand her over to a foreign client at a restaurant.
Police, accordingly, laid a trap and caught Pai when she arrived with the victim at the restaurant at about 8.20pm. “We have also arrested the driver of the car that Pai arrived in,” police sources said.
Sources further said that Pai had befriended the victim in Margao.
“She told the victim that she ran a beauty parlour at her flat in Taleigao and would be willing to pay her more than 5,000 if she worked with her. When the victim told her that she didn’t know anything about working as a beautician, Pai promised to teach her,” sources said.
On Friday, the accused told the victim that a friend’s friend needed a girl for sex and promised to pay her 10,000 for the job.
“The victim was forced to change into ‘modern’ clothes and handed two condoms by the accused, who then took her to Anjuna by car to meet the client,” police sources told GoaChronicle.com.
Explaining Pai’s modus operandi, police said that she would seek out her clients, only foreigners, through the internet.
“She has five to six girls whom she supplies regularly to foreigners residing in the coastal area,” sources said.
