As large number of residents from Margao go to their home village to celebrate the festival by locking their houses or apartments in Margao, thieves have a field day breaking into them.
However, Margao Town Police Inspector Santosh Dessai said 30 police personnel will be deployed for round the clock surveillance of the city specially in those areas that will not have many residents during the festival.
He said personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force and IRB will also be requisitioned to beef up security during the festival.
He however lamented that despite an appeal by the police, not a single citizen has informed the police about their likely absence in Margao during the festival. However, he said the police will conduct surveillance on foot as well as bike.
He also appealed to those who will be keeping their houses locked, not to keep any valuables particularly gold ornaments in their houses during the absence.
Meanwhile organizers of the 18 sarvajanik Ganesh in Margao have been advised to install closed circuit television to keep a check on the various visitors.
