Matanhy lashes out at Govt for insensitivity towards Christian minorities

Former MLA Matanhy Saldanha lashed out at the Digambar Kamat government accusing it of only paying lip service to secularism but in reality taking the Catholic minority community for granted and being totally insensitive to their sentiments given its response to the celebration of the feast of St. Francis Xavier, the patron of the Indies, on 3rd December.

The concluding day of the International Film Festival of India coincides with the Feast of St. Francis Xavier and despite various representations by leaders of the Catholic community including the Rector of the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Old Goa, the government has not done anything to re-schedule the film festival.

St. Francis Xavier is not only a much revered saint by the Catholic community, but in Goa, he is worshipped by all communities irrespective of their religion, thereby making him a symbol of the communal harmony of the State and yet the Digambar Kamat government has failed to take note of this sentiment the people of Goa have to the saint.

It is indeed an irony that practically the entire police force of the State is concentrated in Panjim to provide security to the few dignitaries attending IFFI where at the most only hundreds of people participate while a very skeletal police force is deputed at Old Goa where lakhs of people visit during the novenas.
