Medical, health care experts recommend extending lockdown for 2-weeks without relaxations : Stalin

Chennai: As the corona caseload crossed the 36,000 mark, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin today said extending the complete lockdown for two weeks without any relaxations alone will bring the spread under control.

Mr Stalin, in his initial remarks at a meeting of Legislature party leaders of all parties, said medical and health care
experts with whom he held discussions earlier in the day, have suggested imposition of full lockdown for two weeks without any relaxations.

The medical experts have recommended that implementation of full lockdown without any relaxations alone will bring the virus spread under control, he said, adding, the government was actively considering this.

‘Though the COVID positive cases have come down in the State due to the steps taken by the government, the spread of the virus is yet to be brought under control’, the Chief Minister said.

He expressed concern that people are treating the lockdown as vacation, venturing out of their houses, and roaming in the streets.

‘Though there is fear among the people about the second wave of corona virus, it is not reflected in their attitude’, he said, on people, crowding the market places and wandering in the streets in large numbers, ignoring the warnings issued by the police and the government.

The present lockdown in Tamil Nadu, with total shutdown on Sundays, which was implemented on May 10, is coming to an end on the morning of May 24.

Earlier, in his initial address at the meeting with medical experts, he said the infection was likely to peak in the end of May or first week of June.

“Though states with less population than Tamil Nadu have been recording 50,000-plus cases on a regular basis, the figures in Tamil Nadu are comparatively low. Still the numbers in the State are high”, he said.

“We have to take steps to prevent more infections and deaths,” he said in the meeting in which Chief Secretary V.Irai Anbu and Health Secretary J. Radhakrishnan, among others, also took part.

Mr Stalin, while addressing the media at Tiruchy last evening, hinted of extending the lockdown further with more stringent restrictions.

Citing the prediction of medical experts that the daily COVID-19 case count would reach its peak in the next few weeks, he said in a bid to break the transmission chain, the government imposed a total lockdown from May 10.

This has started showing results in Chennai and some other places. But fresh cases were increasing in 10 other districts, he said, adding that medical experts had warned of fresh cases increasing further.

He also said he had received representations from people from all walks of life, including industrialists, to extend the lockdown with severe restrictions.
