MGP decides to contest by-elections on its own

Panaji, Jan 17 (GCCurrentAffairs) Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) in Goa on Thursday announced that it will contest the up-coming by-elections in the state on its own.

Addressing a press conference at party office in the city, MGP President Deepak Dhavalikar said decision to contest by-elections at both- Shiroda and Mandrem- seats was taken at the central committee of the party.

The decision was taken to fight the menace of defections due to which the by-polls were necessitated,” he said.
To a question, Mr Dhavalikar said the party was not betraying anyone but fighting against defectors.

“We are not betraying anyone. We are fighting against defections and defectors. Against those people who quit parties after one or two years,” the former minister said.

MGP has three MLAs in the state assembly and two of them are ministers in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government in the state. Another MGP MLAs is chairman of Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (GSIDC).

The MGP leader said that the decision of the party to contest the by-poll was not for threatening the government or any other party but to ensure that the state, which was small, should not face continuous defections.

“We are not threatening the government, or BJP or Congress. Our issue is clear. Goa is a small state and there should not be continuous defection in Goa. So somewhere it has to stop. So we are fighting this election against defections,” Mr Dhavalikar said.

Mr Dhavalikar said that his candidature from Shiroda Assembly constituency had already been approaved by the central committee of the party.

By-elections to two assembly constituencies– Shiroda and Mandrem– have been necessitated due to resignation of two Congress MLAs –Dayanand Sopte and Subhahs Shirodkar– who are now in the BJP. Both the ex Congress MLAs are likely to be candidate of the BJP in the by-elections date for which is yet to be announced
