Notorious criminal Michael Fernandes wanted for crimes in Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka, managed to escape once again from police custody when he was taken to the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB) at Porvorim on Friday. This is his fifth escape from police custody.
Michael is particularly wanted by the police after he confessed of a contract being taken by another criminal Joe Boy for harming Home Minister Ravi Naik’s family, more particularly his son Roy Naik who is alleged to have links with the drug dealers in Goa.
In fact on Thursday while opposing the anticipatory bail application of Joe Boy, the Goa Police had referred to Michael admission of the contract.
According to Superintendent of Police (North) Arvind Gawas, Michael along with his partner in crime Deepak were taken to IPHB for treatment and both were handcuffed after seeking the court’s permission.
However, after their handcuffs were removed to enable the doctors to examine them, both the criminals fled from the hospital. Police succeeded in nabbing Deepak shortly thereafter from the Goa University complex, while Michael still remains at large.
Michael and Deepak were brought to IPHB from Bicholim police station where they were taken on transfer order since they were wanted in a crime investigations there.
Following the escape, three constables and one head constable attached to Bicholim police station have been placed under suspension as they had escorted Michael and Deepak to IPHB.
Michael had last escaped from police custody on 22nd February in a very dramatic manner as he jumped off from the police jeep taking him back from Goa Medical College at Cortalim and got on to the motorcycle that was following the jeep.
He was arrested once again from the forests of Khola in Canacona on 11th April in a massive police operation where three police personnel including Police Inspector Vishwesh Karpe were injured. He was arrested along with his accomplice Deepak Kerkar.
Soon after his last escape from police custody, Michael had got back to his criminal activities robbing and looting people not only in Goa but even in Mahrashtra and Karnataka. In fact, as on date, he has 19 cases pending against him.
