The number of students falling sick due to the mid-day meal supplied to them on Wednesday increased to more than 50 by evening with two of them being in critical condition.
While around 50 students were treated at Chicalim Cottage Hospital itself, many other students were shifted at different hospitals in the port town.
All the students belonged to Murgao High School, Sada who were supplied the mid day meal by Ganesh Self Help Group.
While initially only 10 students complained of vomiting after consuming the meal, by afternoon 23 students reported sick and by evening the figure went up to 52.
Meanwhile, police have registered a complaint against Ganesh Self Help Group whose chief Urmila Salgaonkar is reportedly not traceable.
Significantly, this is the second case where the same Urmila Salgaonkar is involved in providing unhygienic food to students. She was booked earlier in 2009 for a similar incident.
The Department of Education has also initiated an enquiry into the incident.
