The mines department has submitted a proposal to the government regarding the formation of an expert committee, including NIO scientists, to study the issue of sand mining in a bid to evolve guidelines for scientific extraction of the minor mineral.
“A tentative list of names of experts has been submitted to the government for approval,” a source in the mines department told GoaChronicle.com on Thursday.
Chief minister Digambar Kamat had assured members in the house during the winter session of the Goa assembly earlier this month that a panel would be appointed to facilitate scientific guidelines, including demarcating of potential sites for sand mining.
The panel would submit its report within a month of its constitution; Kamat had assured the legislative assembly.
The issue of illegal sand mining, several times more than the 59 permits or leases issued for extraction, in three rivers had been discussed by the members.
While the government received a meager income of ` 6 lakh for the current financial year, the business has evolved into a multi-crore activity, estimates reveal.
