The 89 mining lease holders in Goa have been asked to provide details of the ore extracted by them and the amount of rejects lying on the site to the Department of Mines and Geology by 25th May.
The direction has come in the wake of Public Accounts Committee’s observation that eight mines have already exceeded the limit of ore they were permitted to extract and the Department found itself in an embarrassing position of not having the relevant data.
PAC chairman Manohar Parrikar had asked the Department to move the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest to cancel the licenses issued to the eight mining firms.
The eight mines were identified to be belonging to Geetabalal Parulekar, Sesa Goa Ltd, V G Quenim, Timblo, Cipriano D’Souza and two mines of V S Dempo & Co Pvt Ltd and Chowgule.
Parrikar had in fact termed this as “illegality within the legal frame work”.
