MoEF recommends 10kms Buffer Zone to SC

The Union Minister of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Jayanthi Natarajan in the ministry’s affidavit to the Supreme Court has recommended a 10 km buffer zone across wildlife sanctuaries and forests across India and the Apex Court has accepted the affidavit.

Incidentally, Goa government had sent its representatives for the hearing, to press for a 1km buffer zone in Goa, which was the recent Cabinet opinion taken by the Parrikar-led government. However, the State Minister for Environment and Forests Alina Saldanha, did not agree with her government’s decision and preferred a 2kms buffer zone. But environmentalists like Ramesh Gauns, however, continued with its demand for a 10km buffer zone.

The next Supreme Court hearing will be on November 30th, this year but until then, it appears that the 10km buffer zone is hear to stay, not only in Goa but across the country.
