Mopa Airport to be a ‘Cargo Hub’: CM

Dispelling speculation over the contentious issue of the Mopa Airport, while still awaiting the viability and feasibility report of running two airports in the state, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar while addressing industry leaders on his visit to Mumbai said that the government will be focussing on making Mopa a ‘Cargo Hub’ while it will also cater to passenger traffic.

With current Value Added Tax (VAT) on Air Turbine Fuel (ATF) already dropped to 12.5 per cent from 22 per cent in other states, he said that government would not mind dropping the VAT to even 4 per cent to fuel the cargo and air traffic business into the state. The Mopa airport will be able to cater to the growing demand of India’s cargo business on account of its proximity to Mumbai airport.

Dabolim Airport currently caters to 3.5 million passengers. Mopa is expected to initially cater to close to 10 million passengers along with becoming a Cargo Hub.
