Most mining dumps in Forest Areas: MoEF Minister

In a written reply on the floor of the House, Minister for Forest Alina Saldanha stated that a total of 139 mining dumps are on Forest Land, of which 95 are in South Goa and 44 in North Goa. A total of 37 dumps are on government land.

The minister has stated that in most cases, the dumps are covered with tree vegetation and Acacia and Casuarina plantation. However, the total area covered by the dumps. Has not been mentioned in the reply.

Information from the Forest Department revealed names of large mining companies including V M Salgaocar, Dempo Mines, Chowgule, Timblos and VN Bandekar.

Out of the 37 dumps on government land, the department has identified that 27 are in Sattari, 7 in Bicholim and the remaining are scattered at different parts of the mining belt.
