The Mormugao Port Trust suffered heavy losses due to the strike by the residents of Khariwado for two continuous days with the losses being pegged at nearly Rs. 25 crore.
MPT Chairman P Mara Pandiyan was very upset over the development particularly as 40 ships were waiting to anchor at the port were stranded in the high seas.
Operations at six of the 10 berths at MPT were at a standstill due to the strike as these berths are operated by MPT. However, operations at the four berths leased out to private shipyard and defence services were normal.
