Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) Chairman P Mara Pandian said diversification and better connectivity held the keys to the growth of the country’s major ore exporting port.
Speaking to media persons, he said people were willing to use the port provided the connectivity was improved. In this connection, he said traders from Belgaum were willing to use the port for the container traffic but were inhibited by the connectivity.
He pointed out that straight roads are preferred to move containers as it is difficult to maneuver turns with 40 feet long containers and stressed the need to improve the road connecting Goa with Belgaum.
He also stressed the need for MPT to diversify in order to handle the different types of cargo.
Reacting to the differences with the State government over some of its expansion programmes, the chairman opined that MPT’s growth was the State’s growth and added that problems should be resolved amicably.
