Mumbai International Airport now Chhatrapati Shivaji ‘Maharaj’ International Airport

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport was on Thursday renamed as the Chhatrapati Shivaji ‘Maharaj’ International Airport.

A Gazette notification will be issued shortly.

Congratulating the people of Maharashtra, Union Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu said the long-pending demand has now been fulfilled.

“I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modiji for the concern towards the sentiments of people in Maharashtra,” Mr Prabhu tweeted.

The decision was not exactly a name change. Keeping in view the sentiments of people in Maharashtra, the Civil Aviation Ministry proposed to add word ‘Maharaj’. After its approval, the proposal was sent to the Prime Minister’s Office. Now, the decision is out, after the PMO’s nod.

However, a Gazette notification is still pending. Once the notification is out, the word ‘Maharaj’ will be added.

Before this, the Maharashtra Assembly had passed a resolution to make necessary change in the airport’s name.
