A major fire broke out on the premises of Zuari Industrial Limited Monday afternoon following an accident in which the naptha pipeline leading to the plant was punctured. While many vehicles were damaged, the number of casualties was not known though there were rumours that two persons were critically injured.
The accident occurred when work of laying a pipeline for Gas Authority of India was underway in the property of ZIL. Although it is not yet clear as to what exactly happened, it is believed that the naphta plant leading to ZIL was punctured due to which the crane in use there caught fire after its fuel tank exploded.
Immediately thereafter the Electricity Department’s transformer exploded and vehicles of ZIL staff parked in the parking slot caught fire. According to eye witnesses 19 two wheelers, six four wheelers, three trucks and one tempo were gutted in the fire.
There was no damage to the factory’s administrative block or its plant and the staff is believed to be safe. However, it is learnt that two labourers laying the new trench including the crane operator, are seriously injured.
