Beleaguered MLA from Benaulim Micky Pacheco used his birthday celebration not only to show his popularity but also send a message to the Congress not to take the Nationalist Congress Party and more particularly him, for granted.
Addressing the large crowd gathered at the felicitation programme held on his birthday on Sunday at Betalbatim, he said the NCP had the capacity to field candidates in all the 40 constituencies of Goa and even form the next government in the state without any help from the Congress.
While thanking the people for standing by him during the hardships he went through in the last few months, Micky promised to provide a good government for the next five years if the people continued to trust him as they did during his crisis.
Without naming anybody, he said he was a victim of political machinations and the cases filed against him would not stand the test of evidence. “Micky will not be affected even if they freeze my accounts for the next 10 years,” while pointing out that he has continued with his charitable activities and social work even though his accounts have been frozen for the last six months.
NCP’s Goa unit president Surendra Sirsat assured the crowd that the party leadership will back Micky at all times and in all his future endeavours. “We know that Micky has a helping nature and we are fully behind him,” he said replying to former MLA Radharao Gracias’ allegation that the NCP leadership did not stand by Micky during his times of troubles.
While asserting that Nadia Torrado had committed suicide, Radharao Gracias predicted that the case filed against Micky in connection with her death will be dismissed for want of evidence.
Besides, various NCP leaders including Praful Hedge who is in charge of Goa and some actresses from the Hindi film industry Congress leaders like MP Francisco Sardinha and MLA Agnelo Fernandes and BJP MLA Dayanand Mandrekar visited Micky to greet him on his birthday.
