NCP to go for a revamp in Goa

The NCP national president Sharad Pawar will arrive in Goa on Tuesday to announce the appointment of the new NCP state president and the new NCP state youth president. The new appointments will be done at an NCP workers’ convention where many old stalwarts who had left the party will be present.

Sources said that while former tourism minister Nilkant Halarnkar will take over as the new state president from Surendra Sirsat, Yuri Alemao (son of former urban development minister Joaquim Alemao) is likely to be appointed as the new youth president of the NCP, replacing present incumbent Tanvir Khatib.

NCP’s general secretary in-charge of Goa Praful Patel and Goa observer and Sawantwadi NCP MLA Deepak Kesarkar will also attend the worker’s convention at Ghatge Maharaj hall, Porvorim. The convention will begin at 6pm.

Sources said that Surendra Sirsat and Tanvir Khatib are likely to be given new responsibilities at the national level. Though the appointment of the new state president will take place on Tuesday, the reconstitution of the state executive committee will be done in a week or two, sources said.

The larger interest is in galvanizing the party in Goa for the next parliamentary elections. Sources said that in the recent past, local leadership was in talks with several stalwarts who had left the Goa NCP just before the last assembly elections. The Goa NCP has been wooing the likes of Pandurang Raut, Trajano D’Mello and Sangeeta Parab. Sources said that some of these leaders are likely to re-join the party on Tuesday along with several new leaders.
