Upon being strangled to death moments after she was born, a newborn girl was dumped in a garbage bin at the Mapusa municipal market late Friday night.
Mapusa sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) DySP Sammy Tavares said that the Mapusa police have registered offences of murder and destruction of evidence against unknown persons.
The dead infant was found by some women scrounging through the garbage bin for leftover vegetables in the first lane of the Mapusa municipal market around 11 pm on Friday. The baby’s body was found wrapped in cloth and then put in a plastic bag. There was a cord around the infant’s neck. Moreover, the umbilical cord was still on the body, indicating that the baby was born a short while earlier. The women who found the dead baby alerted patrolling policemen.
Upon a medical examination, the post mortem report stated that the baby was killed by strangulation. Although the dog squad was summoned, the canines could not trace the killers’ trail. Tavares said although there are no leads yet, police investigations are on.
