NGOs demand suspension of Environmental Clearances

Several NGOs led by noted environmental activist Ramesh Gauns met with the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests and demanded that environmental clearances of mines in Goa must be suspended. This demand has been made on account of the recent report by Justice MB Shah that exposed a Rs 34,935 crore ‘illegal mining’ scam in Goa.

Ramesh Gauns, told GoaChronicle.com that the NGOs have presented a memorandum to the MoEF minister and she has assured them that she would consider the contents of the memorandum and accordingly act on it. We have strictly demanded the suspension of all environmental clearances in the state.

Subsequent to the release of the Shah Commission report, the Goa government issued a notification for closure of all mines in Goa; though, trade and transportation business in the state has been permitted to continue, leading to a lot of speculation on whether this has been done by the Chief Minister to further export of the iron-ore dumps through this step.
