NHRC To Act Against Goa Government

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken a serious note of the failure of the Goa administration to respond to the notice as well as reminder it had sent with regards to the atrocities committed on the tribal population of Cavrem village.

It may be recalled that following a complaint dated 1st June 2010 lodged by Savio Rodrigues, Founder and Editor in Chief of Goa Chronicle. Com, the NHRC had served notice on the Director General of Goa Police and the Chief Secretary asking for a report on the alleged incident.

However, as neither had responded, the NHRC on 1st July 2011 issued a reminder to the Director General of Police asking that the report be submitted within four weeks failing which it would proceed under Section 13 of the Protection of Human rights Act, 1993.

Although four weeks have passed and since the Director General of Police has not submitted the report, the NHRC is now proposing to go ahead with the enquiry without waiting any longer for the say of the authorities.

In fact, sources in the NHRC commission revealed that the commission has taken a serious note of the DGP’s failure to submit the report and has considered it to be a defiance of the notices issued by the commission.
