The ‘No Detention’ circular issued by the Education Department on 6th May has no sanction of the Cabinet as the Cabinet at its meeting on 28th April had deferred discussion on this issue and asked the Education Department to put up a comprehensive note for its consideration.
However, even though the matter has not been discussed since then, the department has issued the circular making it mandatory for school managements not to detain students from Std. I to Std. VIII.
What has become a bone of contention is the fact that this policy is made applicable to the just concluded academic year even after the results were dispatched to the students and even though most of the schools had not put in place the continuous assessment scheme meant to replace the detention policy.
But what is truly surprising is the fact that Chief Minister Digambar Kamat has remained silent on this issue even though some ministers have given their protest in writing.
