The Panjim Carnival Committee 2011 has decided not to give any prizes in the ‘Sponsored Float Category’ this year which will result in quite a major saving in terms of prize money.
The decision was taken at a meeting held on Wednesday wherein it was decided not to give any prizes in this category as the float is already sponsored by some corporate house and also in a bid to promote the other float categories that mirror the Goan ethos.
As usual there will be five other categories for the float parade. They are the Traditional, Club/Institution, Fun Junk Car, Family and Clown/Joker categories.
In each of these categories, there are 13 prizes up for grabs which besides the first three prizes will also include consolation prizes. In the Traditional category the first prize is of Rs 40,000/- while the last prize is of Rs 5,000/- while in the Club/Institution category, the first prize is of Rs 30,000/- and the last prize is of Rs 3,000/-. In the Fun Junk Car category, the first prize is of Rs 10,000/- and the last prize is of Rs 1,000/- and in the Clown/Joker category, the first prize is of Rs 5,000/- while the last prize is of Rs 500/-.
The Panjim Carnival Committee has appealed to the government to increase the financial assistance sanctioned to them. While the government has sanctioned Rs 4,00,000/- the committee has appealed for assistance to the tune of Rs 30,00,000/-. Last year, the government has provided Rs 35,00,000/- to the committee.
Meanwhile the Carnival Float screening committee has been constituted comprising of Messias Tavares, Richard Gomes, John Dias, John Aguiar, Aaron S Teles and Ceazar D’Mello.
