Contrary to media reports in the local newspapers that Yuri Alemao, son of the Urban Development Minister Joaquim Alemao of the Congress party will be getting a ticket from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) when GoaChronicle.com spoke to Sharad Pawar, president, NCP he categorically stated, “We have not yet called for applications of probable candidates for the forthcoming elections in Goa, where is the question of finalizing candidates to contest. Media reports stating finalization of candidates such as the son of the Congress minister getting an NCP ticket is nothing but speculation and false.”
Political circles have been rife with stories about the Alemao family turning to NCP in the hope of getting tickets in case the Congress High Command refuses to give them tickets. However, while it is known that the Alemaos have been warming up to the Goa NCP Desk-in-Charge Bharati Chavan, the final decision to allot the tickets rest with NCP president Sharad Pawar.
According to Surendra Sirsat, president, NCP Goa, “Where is the question of Yuri Alemao or any other candidate being finalized, when we have not yet called for any application since election has not yet been declared; secondly, in order for any person to get an NCP ticket, the person must be a part of the NCP party, so far Yuri Alemao or Valanka Alemao are not a part of the NCP party. We have a process to follow just like all national parties, the notion the NCP is just a stringer party where ticket hopefuls will just jump over is incorrect, we have our guidelines and party codes that we function by.”
