A 23-year-old waiter in a city-based hotel was arrested for allegedly raping a 10-year-old neighbour. Panjim police said the Basavraj Harijan has been sent to police remand for interrogation.
According to the victim, the youth raped her when she was alone as her widowed mother was away at work and her two siblings were also not at home.
Police said both – the accused and the victim – are known to each other for five years. “Both are neighbours. Harijan would frequent the victim’s place and was there even before the day he committed the crime,” said a police official.
According to the complaint, the accused had even threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to anybody.
Police have registered a case and the youth has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Goa Children’s Act.
In fact, the accused would frequent the house of the victim and was known to have offered sweets to the victim during his visits.
Since the last two days, the girl was down with fever and the mother had taken her to the GMC. While being treated for fever, the victim told
doctors that she had been sexually assaulted by the accused. The doctors then reported the matter to the mother, who later filed a police complaint.
Meanwhile, the medical report confirmed that the girl had been sexually assaulted and the accused will be sent for a medical checkup on Thursday
