Villagers at the gram sabha of the Nuvem village panchayat held on Sunday alleged that there was large-scale tapping of ground water for commercial use through illegal means in the village. They demanded prompt and stern action by the panchayat and concerned government authorities in the matter.
Members of the Nuvem civic and consumer forum (NCCF) brought to the notice of the panchayat that during one of the inspections conducted by them, they noticed at least three to four cases where well water was being pumped into tankers and sold for commercial purposes. The gram sabha adopted a resolution demanding that notices be served by the panchayat on those found selling well water.
Complaints about illegal constructions also came to the fore, with locals demanding that the panchayat act against the violators.
The absence of panchayat members at the gram sabha also drew the ire of members as only four of the eleven-member panchayat were present at the meeting. Olencio Fernandes of the NCCF pointed out that the absenteeism of panchayat members from the gram sabha didn’t bode well for the healthy functioning of the panchayat. He also expressed his indignation over the practice adopted by some members of manipulating the attendance registere authorities,” he said.
