New Delhi, Jan 31 (GCCurrentAffairs) Notwithstanding large scale protest including violence in certain parts in the country against CAA, President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday lauded the passage of the Bill on enactment of the new Citizenship law.
“I am glad to note that both the House of Parliament have passed the new amendment Bill and fulfilled one of the assurances given by Mahatma Gandhi,” President said addressing the Joint Session of Parliament.
There was thumping of desks by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh among the treasury bench members while there was some uproar raised by opposition members on the occasion.
“My government wants to make it clear that anyone reposing faith in India and is keen for citizenship can have the right,” he said.
“….Prakriya paheli thi, aaj bhi aisi hae (Such process existed earlier and these remain the same today also),” President said trying to allay any fear on this.
President Kovind said, Mahatma Gandhi had said that – Hindus and Sikhs in Pakistan should be allowed to come to India if they want to come and to provide them all support and assistance is the ‘duty of the government of India’.
“Several leaders and political stalwarts from time to time have spoken on these lines and it is our duty to honour such commitment,” he said in reference to the enactment of the new Citizenship law under which persecuted religious minorities in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh will be given citizenship in India following a fast track methodology
