An ore laden barge M V Noor IV sunk off Aguada coast on Sunday night while it was transferring ore to a trans-shipper and while six crew members of the barge were rescued by the staff of the trans-shipper one is feared dead.
According to Coastal Police Inspector Anthony Monserrate, six crew members of the barge – Abdul Qazi, Swapan Sardar, Brindas Singh, Amit Hussain Mullah, Hari Om Singh and Dabesh Mandal – managed to climb the ladder of the trans-shipper Vigor.
However, 24-year old Gauranga Mondal who was working as oilman did not succeed and is feared drowned though his body has not yet been traced.
Significantly, this is the second mishap that the same barge has had in the last two years; the earlier one was when it capsized at berth No. 9 of the Mormugao Port.
Atul Jadhav, President of Goa Barge Owners Association expressed regrets over the incident since it resulted in the death of a crew member.
