New Delhi, Aug 10 (UNI) Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party Sonia Gandhi on Friday
declined to say anything on the amendments cleared by the Union Cabinet on the draft Triple Talaq Bill,
saying that her party’s position was clear on the Bill.
Talking to reporters here, Gandhi, when asked about her party’s stand on the amendments cleared by the Union Cabinet on Thursday in the draft Triple Talaq Bill, said, “Our party’s position is absolutely clear on this,
I will not say anything on this further.”
The Union Cabinet on Thursday cleared three amendments in the Triple Talaq Bill, including a provision of
bail in the Bill.
The Cabinet on Thursday cleared three amendments to the Bill, the most important of which is that while Triple Talaq will continue to be a non-bailable offence, the Magistrate will be empowered to decide if the accused can be granted bail.
While the draft bill was easily passed in the Lok Sabha, it ran into trouble in the Upper House, with some parties demanding that a bail provision be included in the bill.
The government hopes that the amended bill, cleared by the Cabinet on Thursday, will win the support of the Congress and other opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha.
