The intermittent rain in the last few days has adversely affected the paddy crop in the State with the Agriculture Department stating that 25 per cent of the crop is destroyed which would result in a drop of 20 per cent in production.
Worst affected are the Pernem, Bardez, Canacona and Ponda talukas while the farmers in Salcete, Tiswadi and Mormugao talukas are not that badly affected.
While nearly 70 per cent of the paddy crop in Salcete has already been harvested and in Tiswadi taluka it has nearly been completed. However, in Canacona taluka that is low lying, the paddy crop is quite badly affected.
Director of Agriculture Department Satish Tendulkar revealed that only 20 per cent of the 31,000 hectares of paddy cultivation has been harvested as on date.
Zonal Agriculture Officers have been directed to inspect paddy fields in their area and prepare a report of the losses farmers have incurred.
The government is yet to decide on compensating the farmers probably because Agriculture Minister Vishwajit Rane was busy concentrating on the by-elections in Valpoi.
