While Pune, Navi Mumbai and Greater Mumbai have been ranked first, second and third place in the ‘Ease of Living Index’, Panjim (Panaji) Goa’s planned Smart City and the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s constituency failed to into the top ten in India but at the 90th position of 111 cities.
Minister of State (I/C) for Housing & Urban Affairs Hardeep Puri, while announcing top 10 cities ranking for Ease of Living Index here on Monday, said,’Pune is ranked at first place, followed by Navi Mumbai at second, Greater Mumbai (3), Tirupati(4), Chandigarh(5), Thane(6), Raipur(7), Indore (8), Vijaywada(9) and Bhopal (10).
The Union Minister further stated that while Swachh Survekshan 2019 will focus on sustainability and encourage large scale citizen participation and ensure progress towards garbage free and open defecation free cities, the Ease of Living Index will encourage cities to move towards an ‘outcome-based’ approach to Urban planning &Management
The Ease of Living Index is an initiative of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) to help cities assess their liveability vis-à-vis global and national benchmarks and encourage cities to move towards an ‘outcome-based’ approach to urban planning and management. It was decided in June 2017 to rank cities based on the liveability parameters. The implementation of the assessment commenced formally on 19 January, 2018 covering 111 cities.
