Parrikar, Sawant delayed filing review petition as they wanted to amend laws mining laws: Claude Alvares

Panaji: Taking a scathing attack to the BJP-led government over the delay in filing review petition in the Supreme Court, Claude Alvares opined that both Chief Ministers of Goa, Late Manohar Parrikar and Dr. Pramod Sawant delayed filing of the review petition because they wanted to amend the laws to make it pro-mining.

Speaking to the The Daily Guardian, Alvares revealed that he is in possession of a letter written by Dr Pramod Sawant to the Central government to change laws in favor of mining in Goa, which was written in the month of July 2019.

He further expressed that since 2015 as the Chief Minister of Goa, Parrikar, had been trying to amend the mining laws to make it pro-mining. After his demise, Dr Pramod Sawant took over as the Chief Minister. He too tried to amend the laws and support the mining lobby.

“Chief Minister of Goa Dr Pramod Sawant’s justification for the delay on filing was ‘the stupidest explanation anyone can give.,” Alvares mocked Dr Sawant. He stated that Sawant tried justify the delay by claiming that when he took over charge as the Chief Minister in March 2019, the outer limit for filing a review petition had already passed.
