Given the fact that there is a high incidence of renal failures in Canacona Taluka for reasons not yet identified, the government had set up a dialysis unit at the Primary Health Centre at Canacona. However, not many patients use this facility due to lack of support systems.
In the first place patients fear using the dialysis unit at Canacona due to erratic power supply. Besides, the PHC does not have ICU unit or any emergency service available in case of any complication to may arise during the procedure and very often patients are referred to Hospicio as this unit does not have the system to carry out a blood transfusion.
Around 150 patients from Canacona need dialysis regularly and 28 of them travel all the way of Hospicio, Margao every alternate day. Around 25 visit a private clinic at Margao while the others travel all the way of Manipal of KLE Hospital at Belgaum. In fact, at Manipal the patients are given preferential treatment as they have become regulars.
To make matters worse, rumours that those using the facility at Canacona do not survive beyond the period of six months, has added to the patients’ fear of using this facility set up by spending lakhs of rupees.
