New Delhi: A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking action against landlords demanding rent from students and labourers during the nationwide lockdown despite the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) order asking landlords not to demand rent from them.
The Ministry had issued an order on March 29, stating that landlord would not demand rent from students, workers and migrants labourers during the nationwide lockdown imposed in view of coronavirus. The violation of the order would attract the action, MHA warned.
The petition urges the full implementation of the Union Home Ministry’s order.
Advocate Pawan Prakash Pathak and Abhijeet, a final year student of Delhi Campus Law Center, have filed the petition seeking action against landlords forcing students and labourers to pay the rent.
The petitioner alleged that despite this order, many landlords are asking students and laborers to pay full rent and are forcing them to vacate their houses for not paying the rent.
