PIL filed against ‘Illegal Mining’ in SC

A petition was filed in the Supreme Court to restrain the resumption of iron and manganese ore in Goa amid a judicial commission estimating a loss of Rs 35,000 crore to the exechequer due to illegal mining there since 2000.

The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Goa Foundation – a NGO that has been spearheading the fight against illegal mining – also sought setting up of a special probe agency to investigate the massive loss to the state, the illegalities committed in mining activities and the connivance of public servants in abetting the same.

Speaking to GoaChronicle.com, Claude Alvares of Goa Foundation stated that in filing this petition we are bringing the Shah Commission Report before the Supreme Court to restrain the resumption of mining in Goa, recover the massive loss to the state and take to task the people responsible for this illegal mining scam.
