Pope Benedict XVI has admitted the Society of Missionaries of St. Francis Xavier, Pilar, more popularly known as Pilar Society, as a Society of Apostolic Life for mission Ad Gentes of Pontifical Right.
The official decree approving the Pilar Society as Society of Apostolic Life for mission Ad Gentes will be read out at a special mass to be celebrated on 4th December at 4 pm in the Pilar Seminary Chapel, with Archbishop of Bombay Cardinal Oswald Gracias presiding over it along with Archbishop of Ranchi Cardinal Telesphore Toppo, Archbishop of Goa Filipe Neri Ferrao and Archbishop Emeritus Raul Gonsalves.
With this status, the Pilar Society will now be exclusively subjected to the power of the Apostolic See as far as its internal governance and discipline is concerned, as laid down in Canon 593 of the Code of Canon Law of the Vatican.
The society will have to change its constitution to incorporate the changes necessitated by this status which will be primarily pertaining to the powers, rights and responsibilities of the superiors of the society and its relationship with the Holy See disclosed Fr. Theodore Mascarenhas in charge of the Department of Asia, Africa and Oceania of the society at the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Culture.
