Even as the government is keen on acquiring more and more land for setting up industries, nearly 20 per cent of the plots in the Industrial Estates set up in Goa are currently lying vacant, disclosed Goa State Industries Association (GSIA) President Shekhar Sardessai.
Disclosing that using modern methods including Google imaging their preliminary study reveals that 15 to 20 per cent of the plots allotted to various industries have not been utilized, said Sardessai who added that the study should be completed in another 10 days.
The government has set up a task force that includes GSIA to identify unutilized and underutilized plots in the industrial estates and also to review the current procedure to allot these plots and suggest necessary changes.
Sardessai opined that the policy adopted by Goa State Industrial Development Corporation in allotting land is not correct as there are huge tracts of land that are not utilized even though many entrepreneurs are waiting for land to start their enterprise.
While stressing the need of merit being the only criterion while allotting plots, the GSIA has recommended setting up a special screening committee to screen the applications received by GSIDC.
