PM meets delegation from Goa on mining issue, assures to find solution

Panaji, Feb 6 (GCCurrentAffairs) Almost a year after mining operations were closed in Goa, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met a delegation of MPs, MLAs from mining belt and members of Goa Mining People’s Front in New Delhi on Wednesday.

According to Union Minister for AYUSH Shripad Naik, the Prime Minister assured to find some ways to resolve the problem.

‘Met the Hon’ble PM shri @narendramodi ji with delegation on resumption of mining in Goa.He assured to find some ways to solve the problem,’ Mr Naik said in the tweet.

The Prime Minister had agreed to meet the delegation after Mr Naik sought an appointment to meet him.

During an interaction with the booth level workers of South Goa on January 20, the Prime Minister had said that the government was making efforts for early resumption of mining operations in the state to save livelihood of people dependent on the industry.

Recently, mining dependents had threatened to work against BJP candidates in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections if the party led government at the Centre failed to resolved the impasse by February 13.

For almost 11 months, the mining issue has been hanging in fire in the state after Supreme Court imposed a ban on extraction and transportation of iron ore from 88 mining leases last year in February. From March 2018, the mining operations in the state have come to standstill. There have been assurances from leaders of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but nothing concrete has happened yet.
