Polling begins for local body polls in Arunachal

Itanagar: Voting for the simultaneous Panchayat and Municipal elections in Arunachal Pradesh, began early this morning, amid foolproof security.

The polling started at 0700 hours and will continue till 1600 hours.

A total of 4,89,423 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise at 1,472 polling stations across the state.

EVMs being used for the two civic bodies– Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) and Pasighat Municipal Council (PMC), and ballot papers for the Panchayat.

Voting is being held for 141 Zilla Parishad constituencies (out of 242) and 1,702 Gram Panchayat seats (out of 8,215) as more than 6,000 candidates have won uncontested. Of the 6,500 elected unopposed, included 99 ZPM and 6,401 GPM.

A total of 53 candidates are in the fray for 23 wards (out of 28) under the two Municipal bodies. Five out of 20 wards in Itanagar were declared to have sent their corporators elected unopposed.

According to an election official, Covid infected persons, if any, will have to come to the polling station one hour prior to the end of voting, following all safety protocols.

As per the State Election Commission (SEC), elections to 110 GP seats will not be held due to single nomination rejection or there was no candidate or kept in abeyance, and it will take a final call after the electoral process of the current phase is over.

The SEC has issued notification for election to the 4-Hawai North ZP seat in Anjaw district and polling will be held on January 11 next. Elections to Vijaynagar ZP constituency seat along with 40 GPM seats in Changlang district had been kept in abeyance by the Commission due to various reasons.
